Thalweg was founded in 2018 by consultants who had observed a persistent gap between theoretical frameworks and operational reality. We saw organizations struggle not because they lacked ambition or capability, but because consulting recommendations often failed to account for the specific constraints they faced.
Our name comes from the geographical term for the deepest part of a river channel — the path where water naturally flows. We chose it because it represents our approach: finding the natural course through organizational challenges rather than imposing artificial solutions.
We established our practice in Hong Kong specifically to serve organizations operating in the Asia-Pacific context. The region presents distinctive governance structures, regulatory environments, and cultural considerations that require specialized understanding rather than transplanted Western frameworks.
Over the past eight years, we have developed expertise in three areas where we consistently saw demand for more contextual consulting: nonprofit and social enterprise operations, business continuity planning, and cross-border operational management.
